So What Blog
My book ends with two first hand accounts from Helen Waterford and Alfons Heck. Helen escapes the dreadful Holocaust and and Alfons survives through the war. They state why they wrote about the events that transpired and what they want other people to learn from them. This book matter because it teaches a valuable lesson: Violence isn't the answer. This book shows the ways that this issue could have been resolved without violence. They explain that instead of understanding and communicating with each other we seek vengeance and live with hatred. On page 223, Alfons Heck last words in this first hand account were, “My goal is to share with others the lessons I learned at such a tremendous and painful cost. I know now that genocide can happen in any society where people hate those that are different. When we allow ourselves to live with hatred and seek revenge against our enemies, we destroy all hope of understanding and communicating with each other. It is up to me to plant the seeds of this message in the minds of my readers and listeners. And I hope they will believe me. Only then will I feel that my survival had some meaning”. This message that Alfons and Helen were trying to communicate is still very valuable today. Leaders in other countries should and can think about instead of violence, they should understand their adversary and try to find a solution that doesn't involve war. This lesson can even be applied to something as little as an argument with a friend. That is the lesson from this book and that is why its still valuable today.

The book I'm reading is “Parallel Journeys”. It's based on two kids and their experience growing up on Nazi Germany. My book takes place in 1939 in Nazi Germany, specifically the Holocaust. While they were experiencing their journey, millions of jew were either being killed or put to labor in concentration camps. The events that happened in my book our similar to the events that happened in the real world because my book describes the horrors of the Nazi Germany and Nazism was a real world event, spreading through some of Eastern Europe. During this time, Germany believed that they were doing the right thing by eradicating the Jews and spreading the idea of Fascism. My book covers the experiences of two children. One of them is a Jewish girl named Helen Waterford. She did not like what the Nazi leaders were doing to her people. The other person is Alfons Heck, a young German boy who was a member of Hitler’s “master race”. He believed that the Holocaust was a good thing that benefitted the Germans. Other connections made between my book and real world events are Hitler’s Youth. Hitler’s Youth was a generation of younger kids, all members of the aryan “master race”. On page two it says, “ Alfons Heck considered himself fortunate. He was one of the millions of German children who were Adolf Hitler’s chosen people, his Master Race.” This is why the events in my book relate to historical events.
The book I have been reading is called Parallel Journeys, which is the story of the holocaust from the two perspectives of Helen Waterford, a young German Jew, and Alfons Heck, and young member of the Hitler Youth. Helen Waterford fled the country because the Third Reich was becoming to anti-Semitic. This relates to the creation of Israel because during the holocaust the Jews were in conflict with the Germans and tried to flee the country to other European countries. Israel was created by the conflicts that the Jews and the Arabs were having. The United Nations came to the conclusion that a new country should be founded. Thus Israel was born. ADL.com states that, “The British concluded that they could no longer manage Palestine and handed the issue over to the United Nations. On November 29, 1947, after much debate and discussion, the UN recommended the partition of Palestine into two states one Jewish and one Arab. The Jews accepted the UN resolution while the Arabs rejected it.” That is why the events in my book relate to the creation of Israel.
Hello. This is a paper I've been working on with my partner Kennan. If you want to see my partners blog, click here.
Homeless Animals By: J.C. Fentress and Kennan K. Mottershead Introduction Many animals in Wake County don't have a place they can call home and because of that they are forced to stay at the shelters. Those animals are not receiving the love they deserve and animal shelters are forced to put those animals down. In fact, one shelter in N.C. is killing 99% of the animals they receive because are only allowed to keep the animals for 72 hours before they must be euthanized. Not only does this affect the animals, but it also affects the shelters that hold the animals. It’s very expensive to keep the animals for a certain amount of time, but it’s also expensive to put them down. Many animals in Wake County don't have a place they can call home and because of that they are forced to stay at the shelters. Currently, there are too many homeless animals in Raleigh, N.C. and our group wants to reduce the amount of them and find them a home. I believe that this issue is very important to our community. Although I am allergic to cats and dogs, I love almost every animal. I want to make sure that animals that don’t have a home can have one and that they will have someone they can call a friend. You should definitely be interested in this issue because shelters are having to euthanize innocent animals that can be easily saved by people like you. Animals that do not even live in shelters may wonder into the street and get hit a car, or bite someone and give them a disease. I also think that you should be interested in this issue because it is always good to have a pet that you can go on walks with and give them tummy rubs. The Issue This issue not only affecting the animals and shelters, but it’s also affecting you. Peta.org says, “Instead they (the animals) are cruelly killed by people who don’t want them, are dumped on roadsides and left to die from starvation or being hit by a car, or spend their short lives homeless, unwanted, and producing more litters of animals for whom no homes exist.” Last year nearly 225,000 dogs were euthanized. This issue is also affecting other citizens in Raleigh. Homeless animals have been around in our community for decades. One of the causes of homeless animals is overpopulation. About 3 million animals are born every hour in the US, which means shelters don't have enough space to keep the animals in there. Another thing that causes homeless animals is lack of commitment. People are adopting animals for the wrong reasons and dumping them on the streets. Owners also don’t have them spayed or neutered so they keep reproducing and owners can't afford to keep them. Hundreds of people in North Carolina are affected by homeless animals. Many stray dogs and cats carry diseases and could possibly attack you. They are reckless and not careful due to lack of training. They can run out into the streets and get hit by a car or bus. If homeless animals aren’t taken care of then they will roam the streets and attack people, be euthanized by animal shelters, or hit by cars and busses. In our community others have helped by volunteering at the Wake Animal Shelter. Another way they have helped is by adopting animals from the shelter. Other organizations such as the SPCA are helping the animals by having food drives for them, but it's still not enough. There are too many animals to take care of and too little volunteers to help them. The animals need more attention and more help too keep them happy. Other ways people are helping is by having food drives for the animals, volunteering at the shelters, and adopting pets. Pet Food Pantry, a local pet organization, has been holding pet food drives for the animals. The Wake Animal Shelter has volunteer hours for everyday citizens. Also people like you can adopt a pet from a local shelter and save them from being euthanized by the shelters. Conclusion There are many ways that you can help in homeless animals in your community. One way to help is by going around town, looking for animals that don't have a leash on and bring them to an adoption center to make sure a good owner will find them. But what I think is the best way to get the message out, is at the Variety show at the end of the school year because that is when all of the school is at the same place and at the same time. We could tell the school that we want to collect 1,200 dollars by the end of the school year so we can donate it to shelters. If there was a problem, it would most likely be that we do not get enough money by the end of the school year. You, as a student, would need to know that you are required to go to the Variety show and how much money the shelters need. Another way that you could help is by helping out at an adoption center by feeding the animals or doing as little as making sure that they go out on a walk. The best way that you can help is by adopting an animal that fits you best. If you adopt, you are saving your new pet from most likely dying and it will get the love it needs. Although it does cost money, it is worth it to have a good friend and save a life. Citations Wral. "NC Shelter Kills 99 Percent of Animals, Records Show." WRAL.com. N.p., 15 Nov. 2012. A Food Desert is a low-income area where a significant number or share of residents live more than 1 mile from a supermarket in urban areas and more than 10 miles from a supermarket in rural areas and in North Carolina they are a real problem. Most super markets are in these areas are very unhealthy and most citizens living there are have to go there and eat very unhealthy foods. I’m interested in this issue because it is very important. Living a healthy lifestyle is very critical. It will make you live longer and prevent diseases. To prevent this you can go to Stop Hunger Now or go to a food bank to provide healthy foods to people that live in food deserts.
Thousands of North Carolina citizens gather in Raleigh on Saturday, February 13th to support public education, economic sustainability, worker's rights and livable wages, and health care. I am interested in this issue because it is about improving human rights. You should be interested in this issue because you might be affected by the lack of rights as well as others. Human rights is very important because all people need to be treated fairly and with respect. To improve this problem you can participate in the moral march to get the attention of a higher authority to help your issue. |
